My name is Steve Hershberger. In August of 2021 my start-up blew up and my world imploded. I lost nearly everything. Financial security, identity, purpose, supposed 'friends', you name it. I descended into hopelessness and reliance on alcohol just to get through each day. I gained 65 pounds. I became a victim of cruel fate.
Then I turned it around, with the help of a friend. Victimhood didn't become me.
I leaned into doing hard things. Misogis. I became ok with who I was and was not. I became intensely authentic. Kintsugi.
Eight months later I found myself at the starting line of the first of many competitive ultra-endurance gravel races. I left my fears and doubts at the starting line. I was in a better place, having jettisoned the destruction, chaos and toxic enablers. I thought I made it.
However, the universe had a different plan. On May of 2024, I was struck by a hit & run driver. The impact flatlined me for 2 minutes and left me with 11 broken bones, including a broken neck and broken back. That should have been the end.
Instead, it was just the beginning.
